Personal Notes: |
The last child in the family was Henry St John Boucher - named for his aunt and uncle, Isabella Boucher Elworthy and her husband Henry St John MADDEN. Harry was born Mt Perry in 1882, possibly at home, with Nurse McGlynn and George Townsend Elworthy as medical attendants. When Harry started school on 04 Jul1887 as pupil No. 321, his father's occupation was shown as 'doctor'.
Aged 14. Harry became a pupil-teacher at Mt Perry and was still teaching there in 1905. Later he was relocated to Croydon in the isolated tropical Gulf country. The only transport was a buckboard from Cairns to Croydon - but it was the wet season and the unlucky new teacher became stranded between two flooded rivers. During the forced delay, poor Harry caught malaria but 'gulf fever' ensured his stay in the tropics was a reasonably brief one. Transfers to schools in Rockhampton and Brisbane followed until 1919 when Harry was appointed to Harlaxton school in Toowoomba where he stayed for 30 years! Photographs of the time (possibly when he married in 1918) show Harry as a handsome, fashionably-dressed man with a neat military style moustache, wearing a Homburg hat and carrying a gold-topped cane. With his record of long and creditable service, Harry's teaching term was extended past the official age limit. On 26 May 1952 - his 70th birthday, he retired from the State teaching service, then taught for a time at the Church of England Boys' School. In all, Harry taught for over 56 years! On and off for 20 years Harry was secretary of Darling Downs branch of the Queensland Teachers Union. A regular tennis player until well into his sixties, he was vice-president of the Lawn Tennis Association in Toowoomba. At one time a committeeman of the Toowoomba Tourist Bureau and the library, Harry was secretary of the North-east Progress Association as well. At his farewell presentation, the headmaster described Harry as a fine gentleman with a kindly consideration for others, a ready smile, a good sense of humour and an energy that was notable. He also said these qualities, complementary one to the other, represented the characteristics in a teacher that will always mark his career as distinctive. He added there were thousands of men and women in Queensland - and perhaps in distant places, who owe some part of their knowledge, character and success to the slightly-built man who began to teach 56 years ago. At the home of the bride's parents in Robinson Street in Toowoomba on 27 ApI 1918 Harry had wed Catherine Jane ROBINSON, born in Toowoomba on 10 Sep 1881, daughter of Jane nee CAMERON and Frederick ROBINSON. Harry and Kate had two children, both born at Toowoomba - Colin Gregory and Jean Robinson Elworthy. Kate died on 03 Dec 1963 and Harry on 09 Oct 1969. Both are buried at Toowoomba. 1905 Electoral Roll, Aland Street,Charters Towers. 1913, Kent Street, Maryborough. 1930, Jellicoe Street, Toowoomba. |
