The Lone Pine Memorial, situated in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Anzac, is the main Australian Memorial on Gallipoli, and one of four memorials to men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Designed by Sir John Burnet, the principal architect of the Gallipoli cemeteries, it is a thick tapering pylon 14.3 metres high on a square base 12.98 metres wide. It is constructed from limestone mined at Ilgardere in Turkey.

The Memorial commemorates the 3268 Australians and 456 New Zealanders who have no known grave and the 960 Australians and 252 New Zealanders who were buried at sea after evacuation through wounds or disease. The names of New Zealanders commemorated are inscribed on stone panels mounted on the south and north sides of the pylon, while those of the Australians are listed on a long wall of panels in front of the pylon and to either side. Names are arranged by unit and rank.

The Memorial stands over the centre of the Turkish trenches and tunnels which were the scene of heavy fighting during the August offensive. Most cemeteries on Gallipoli contain relatively few marked graves, and the majority of Australians killed on Gallipoli are commemorated here.

The night of May 9-10 was chosen by Anzac commanders for several 'demonstrations'. One was a reconnaissance from Quinn's Post by men of the 15th Battalion, whose orders were to attack, and if possible occupy, enemy trenches just fifteen metres from the Australian trenches at their closest point to Quinn's. At 10.45 that night, one hundred 15th Battalion men crept from the trenches at Quinn's then dashed across No Man's Land towards the Turkish lines. At the same time, the 12th's A Company dispatched a twenty man patrol to try to pin point the position of Beachy Bill to the south.
The men of the 15th quickly seized the Turkish trenches opposite Quinn's Post. One party pushed on and, in a valley, came on a Turkish company sleeping in the open. Scores of Turks were shot or bayoneted as they lay under their blankets. Five Turks huddling around a candle and a telephone in a command tent were shot where they sat. But the Turks rushed in reinforcements and almost cut off the Australian raiding parties. Lieutenent-Colonel Cannan, commander of the 15th, had reinforcements from the 16th Battalion sent in to help the raiders withdraw. The two battalions suffered more than 200 casualties, and the Turkish positions that were gained had to be given up. This 'demonstration' had been a pointless waste of life.
